I found my 1949 Chevrolet Fleetline Deluxe 2-door Sedan by accident while working at the General Motors Media Archive. I was hired in 1996 as a Product Expert and in 1999 my boss at the time, John Robertson, had just finished writing a series of four books called A Pictorial History of Chevrolet, using some of the original factory photos from the Archive. In his second book of the series, covering 1940-1954 Chevrolets, was a page about the author and there was a photo of him sanding the hood of his ‘49 Chevy, getting it ready for paint. After the release of his books, he decided to sell about eight cars from his collection and the 1949 Chevrolet was the one I chose to purchase. He had stripped off the original paint to bare metal, revealing an almost perfect rust free body and the car only had 32,000 miles on it.

We made a deal and I have owned the car ever since, about 9 years, and have been very happy with it. I get a lot of attention at the Downriver and Woodward Cruises or where ever else I drive it. The dark maroon paint with the wide whitewall tires make it a real stand out and the fastback design of the Fleetline series is just plain cool. The car is very original in appearance and almost everyone who comments about it says "I had on just like that when I started driving."

GM’s Century Cruise pays tribute to GM’s past and the passion owners have for their vehicles. On Saturday, August 16, 2008 this vehicle and more than 100 other classic GM vehicles will cruise from the GM Global Headquarters at the Renaissance Center up Woodward Avenue to the heart of the Woodward Dream Cruise in Royal Oak and the surrounding suburbs. One of these vehicles will be crowned “top cruiser” based on a text voting campaign.
