The General Motors Institute (GMI) was established in Flint, MI, to meet the growing company’s burgeoning training and education needs. With General Motors’ employment more than doubling between the years 1920 and 1926, GMI focused on training plant supervisors and engineers and also offered extension courses and a work-study co-op program. It was soon an accredited university, offering degrees in engineering and management, and became the independent Kettering University in the 1990s.
