With Oakland’s sales still weak and its debt growing, Billy Durant saw another opportunity to acquire a brand with large growth potential for a relatively small investment. Billy Durant initially bought a fifty percent interest in Oakland and then increased it to a hundred percent the following year, after the death of Oakland’s founder, Edward Murphy.
