Because of the widespread interest in GM’s Motorama shows, GM made an annual film, which brought the Motorama to audiences unable to see it in major cities. In 1956, GM sponsored a 10 minute, futuristic fantasy Motorama promotional film (16mm Anscocolor). This particular film, Design for Dreaming, introduced the new 1956 car lineup, Frigidaire's
Kitchen of Tomorrow, dream cars and the electronic
Highways of Tomorrow. It was filmed at the 1956 General Motors Motorama show that featured 63 exhibits and 26 production cars and occupied 26,000 square feet of New York City’s Waldorf Astoria ballroom....

I was there...
My Dad was an employee of General Motors, so I grew up with an intimate knowledge of the company, and knew I also wanted to become an employee of GM one day.
In 1953, my Dad took me to the Detroit Auto Show, which is where I saw my first 1953 Chevrolet Corvette. I knew at that time I would own a Corvette some day, and kept up with the latest designs via my Hot Rod magazines.

1949 – January - 20
The ''Transportation Unlimited'' New York City show opened at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and ran for eight days closing on January 27, 1949. More than 300,000 people visited it during its run at the Waldorf and were treated to elaborate displays of 32 production and custom vehicles from each of GM’s five car divisions. The show officially became known as Motorama when it began to travel around the country in 1953.

The Opel brothers acquired Friedrich Lutzmann’s motor car plant and began production of the ‘Opel Patent Motor Car, System Lutzmann’ in Rüsselsheim, Germany. More >
